Asking a Non-Muslim to pray for a Muslim

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by DaruliftaaZambia.com

Question

Can you request a non-muslim to pray for you?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to request a non-Muslim who believes in Allah to pray for you.[i] However, with regards to those non-Muslims who pray to other deities besides Allah, the Qur’aan states:

But the prayer of the non-believers is nothing but futile.”

Therefore, it is pointless to ask a non-believer who prays to a deity besides Allah to pray for you.

فَكَذَلِكَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْمُشْرِكُونَ الَّذِينَ يَعْبُدُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا غَيْرَهُ، لَا يَنْتَفِعُونَ بِهِمْ أَبَدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ؛ وَلِهَذَا قَالَ: {وَمَا دُعَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ إِلا فِي ضَلالٍ}
