Question:

There is a Hadith about women who will be “clothed yet naked” in hell.

Is it about women wearing tight/short/transparent clothes in public in front of non-mahrams? or about those who wear such dresses in front of Mahrams and other women?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Imam Muslim(رحمه الله) brings a chapter heading in his Sahih;

Chapter: Women Who Are Clothed Yet Naked, Turning Away From Righteousness And Leading Others Astray

The Hadith is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira( رضى الله عنه )narrates that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)of Allah (عز و جل)said:

“Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the ox with them and they would be beating people, and the women who would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps of the Bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they would not smell its odour whereas its odour would be smelt from such and such distance.”.[1]

This Hadith is amongst the miracles of Prophecy and it has occurred as told by Messenger

As for the owners of the whips, they are the young men, owners of whips.

As for the clothed yet naked is subjected to few meanings; One meaning is that, that they will be blessed in abundance with the various gifts and bounties of Allah, yet they will not be grateful.

The second is that wearing clothes, yet naked from doing good and heedlessness for the hereafter.

The third is that they will reveal something of her body to demonstrate the beauty, hence, they are scantily dressed and wearing clothes.

The fourth is that they will wear describe what is underneath scantily dressed but naked in the meaning.

As for the inclining and inclined, it was said that they deviate from the obedience of Allah (عز و جل), the Highest, and they will deviate from preserving private parts and other things.[2]

Although, this Hadith denotes women wearing tight, short, transparent clothes etc. in public and in front of non-mahram in order to seduce them. Care should be taken to not dress inappropriately in front of Mahram, as well as women folks.

Only Allah knows best.
