Playing Chess   In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Playing Chess

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

It is severely disliked and a grave sin to play chess.  The reason is that playing chess wastes a lot of time and distracts one from his or her religious and worldly obligations  (Hidayah p.475 v.2)

Saaiduna Abu Musa Al-Ashari Radiallahu Anhu has said, “Only a sinner plays chess”  (Baihaqi in his Shuab al-Iman)

Only Allah Knows Best
