Question:

If Sajdah Tilawah verse is read for Taleem and not for Tilawah, will Sajdah become Wajib? For e.g. when doing Tafseer etc.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

In regards to sajdah tilawah it will still become necessary whenever one hears the ayaats of sajdah, however, the Hanafi fuqaha have made an exemption in three circumstances when one will not make sajdah tilawah and they are as follows:

  1. Listening to the verses of sajdah by a means of echo or reverberation.
  2. Listening to the verse recited by an insane person (the reason being his recitation is not considered a proper recitation, as he is not competent to judge his own self).
  3. Listening to the recitation of parrot.[i]

In conclusion, if one hears the recitation of sajdah tilawah whether it be Taleem purposes or just listening to the recitation of the Quran sajdah will become wajib.

Only Allah knows best.
