Question

A father purchases some gold as a wedding gift for his daughter. The wedding was postponed; hence the gold is still with the father. The gold has not been in possession for a year. However, his zakat due date was the 1st of Ramadan, does the father pay the zakat on the gold?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Zakat is obligatory on the wealth which remains in a person’s possession for a lunar year. As the gold is still in your possession, you have to give zakat when the year passes on it (1).

[1] Radul Mukhtar Kitabu Zakat Vol 3, Page 508 -209, Maktabat ul Waheediya:- when the whole (year) passes on the wealth and the wealth is in your possession then zakat is obligatory
