Is Taking Out a Life Cover or Life Assurance Be in the Same Ruling As Life Insurance

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

We know that taken out a life insurance policy is haram, will taking out a life cover (or life assurance as they call it sometimes, I think) be permissible, or will that fall under the same ruling of conventional insurance and be deemed impermissible.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Based on our research the life insurance is also called life assurance [1].

As for the life cover, it seems to be seldomly used.

According to Allianz Australia, the life cover is also known as life insurance or death cover.[2]

Consequently, these are life insurance policies thus it will be not be permitted to subscribe.

Only Allah knows best
