Question

A Madrasa takes place in the Jamat Khana of the Masjid, will it be permissible to keep a small dustbin in the Jamat  Khana where the children and the elders can dispose of the rubbish?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

There are many ahadith that talk about the importance and immense reward of cleaning and purifying the Masjid from filth and dirt.

Saaidah Aaisha Radiallahu Anha said the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam commanded that mosques should be built among the houses (i.e., in each neighborhood) and that they should be cleaned and perfumed.” (Sunan Tirmidhi)

In another hadith, the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “Whosoever removes adhaa (anything repulsive or harmful) from the Masjid, Allah will make a house for him in Jannah.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Regarding your question, if one was to put a small bin in the Masjid so that loose paper and dirt can be thrown in then it will be permissible. The main thing is that there should be no foul smell from the bins, thus, having a bin where you’re restricting it to loose paper, etc… will be permissible. The detestability will come if people start throwing fast food such as fish and chips etc. which causes a foul smell in the Masjid.
