Answer

Alcohol is divided into two types:

  1. Khamr (Wine) is that type of alcohol that’s derived from grapes and dates.
  2. Non-Khamr is that type of alcohol that’s derived from sources apart from grapes and dates.

Regarding the first type of alcohol, it is unanimously agreed upon by all the jurists that the alcohol extracted from grapes and dates is unlawful. The difference of opinion is regarding the second type of alcohol.

Imam Ibn Abideen states in his book called Raddul Muhtar p.323 v.5:

“Fatwa is given on the view of Imam Muhammad and this is also the position held by the other three Imams, due to the saying of the Prophet (PBUH) Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is unlawful (narrated by Imam Muslim), and also: Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, then a small quantity of it is also forbidden” (Narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Majah & al-Darqutni and he classed it as authentic.)

Regarding your question, if the products/items been extracted from dates and grapes, then it will be impermissible for one to use. However, if the items/products been extracted from other sources excluding the top two (grapes and dates), then it will be permissible for one to use. (Fatwa Haqqaniyyah p.199 v.5) also, their Salah will be accepted Insha’Allah.

One should also bear in mind that if alcohols other than grapes and dates are consumed to such an extent that it reaches the level of intoxication, then they too will be impermissible to use. (Ahsanul Fatawa p.488 v.8)
