Is Yoga Permissible

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question

Has anyone written on the permissibility of yoga?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Some have written on the permissibility of yoga, but they have maintained the same principle as the others who say it is impermissible. The principle is that if the yoga involves other religious rituals or traditions, then it is impermissible. However, if the stretches, exercises, and meditation do not involve any other religious rituals or chants, then it will be permissible.

Yoga in different parts of the world is practiced differently. Some practice yoga religiously (with chanting and other religious rituals) and others practice yoga to be healthy and increase flexibility. Being healthy is encouraged in Islam.
