Question

What is the ruling on fishing at a place where you are not allowed to take the fish and give it to someone or use it as a meal but rather you need to release them?

Is this allowed as the fishing is done for fun and the fish are released again?

Answer:

The above-mentioned sport is not allowed in Islam. Fishing in Islam is only permissible when one does it to sell or to eat. One is not allowed to catch fish for pleasure and then release as this causes unnecessary harm to the fish.[1]

Hadrat ibn Umar narrates the prophet peace be upon him mentions cursed is that person who uses any living creature as a target.[2]
