Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Is it allowed to do wudu to obtain taharah in a local leisure centre swimming pool in the UK which will have chlorine in? Also, there are other people that will be using that pool too for swimming. Does it depend on how big the pool is?

Answer:

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

It will be permissible as long as there is no impurity that has fallen into the pool(with absolute certainty), even if it has been mixed with chlorine.[1] If there is an impurity that has fallen into the pool (with absolute certainty), then the pool will be permissible to use depending on its size. If it is a large pool (i.e. surface area of 20.9 m2 or diameter of 5.16 meters), then it will be permissible to swim in and make wuḍū’ from, unless the impurity has clearly affected the water (by changing either its colour, taste or smell).[2]If it is not a large pool and impurity has fallen in (with absolute certainty), then it will not be permissible to swim in or make wuḍū’ from until it is purified.[3]
