What are the conditions for being a witness at a Nikah ceremony?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
What are the conditions of being a witness at a Nikah and what is the ruling if the girl does not have any close relatives who can be the witnesses?

Answer

(Fatwa: 403/B)

The witness can be anyone who is aaqil (sane), baaligh (adult) and Muslim. It is not necessary for a witness to be from immediate relatives. However, there should be two witnesses who can listen and understand the Nikah words that are exchanged by a man and woman:

ولاینعقد نکاح المسلمین الا بحضور شاھدین حرین عاقلین بالغین الخ (ھدایہ)
