Is it OK to make intention for missed fasts as “This is for my missed fasts (if any)…”?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Assalaamu ‘alaikum! I need to keep few fasts that were missed. But, I do not exactly remember the number of missed fasts. When I keep fasts on ‘Arafah, Aashura or Shab-e-baraat, I make the intention in this way: “This fasting is for my missed fasts (if any)…otherwise this is the Nafl fast”. Kindly advise me if this way of making the intention is correct. If not, kindly advise me the correct way of making the intention for the missed fasts which I do not remember.

The said method of intention is not right. If your heart confirms that you had missed some fasts though their exact number is not known, then you only need to make the intention of missed fasts, and do not suffix it with the intention of nafl (otherwise?..). And when you had kept missed fasts to an extant that your heart feels satisfied that you have finished all missed fasts, then you can keep with the intention of nafl. And if you wish to obtain the virtues of Arafah, Aashurah etc, keep particular nafl fasts in these particular days, and complete missed fasts later as much as your heart deposes.
