Taking Payment For Approval Of A Cremation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

I have a question I need help with plz

From a Muslim Doctor.

She signed off a death certificate, the family requested cremation. She had to sign that too n she got paid for the cremation
She wants to know is her money halal?

Answer:

It was not permissible to sign for the cremation.

The money that was received as a payment for the signing of the cremation will be Haraam, hence the money will have to be returned to the original owner. In a situation where one does not have records of who is the original owner, or for some reason it is impossible to return it, then the money will have to be disposed of, by giving it to a poor person who is eligible to receive Zakaat, without intending to gain any reward.
