Filling A Gap In The Saff

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

What is the correct method of filling a gap when all those around the gap have started their salaah. Must a musali who is filling the gap from the saff behind take more smaller steps or fewer bigger steps. How many and what kind of steps will result in the salaah breaking.

When a musali comes and he is the only person in hes saf, must he pull someone back, from the end of the saf , or from the middle of the saf, and then there will be a gap in the middle of that saf.

Answer:

Filling the Saff in front:

The method of filling the Saff in front of you (whilst you are in Salaah) is waiting a short while so that a latecomer can fill the gap. If no one fills it or it’s not possible for anyone to fill it, one will be allowed to take two standard steps to fill the Saff. If two steps cannot be taken to fill the gap in front, one should take as many steps necessary with a pause of a Rukn after every step, so that he does not invalidate his Salaah through Amal-E-Katheer.

Regarding being alone in the Saff:

If one reads Salaah alone in a Saff behind the Imam, his Salaah will be counted and will be valid; however, one is advised not to read Salaah alone in a Saff behind the Imam; rather he should wait until Ruku for another Musalli to come and accompany him. If no one comes as the time of Ruku approaches, he is allowed to gently pull someone from the front saff (who knows this ruling) to accompany him. He should then stand next to that brother in the back Saff. Once another Musalli comes, the gap in the Saff ahead should be filled by that Musallee. If he thinks there is no one in the front Saff who knows this ruling, he can start reading his Salaah alone behind the Imam in the Saff. (Fataawa Mahmudiyyah Vol. 6 Pg. 501). These days people are unaware of this ruling; therefore, if in doubt, rather read alone in the Saff instead of pulling someone to come back because you may jeopardise his Salaah.
