Savings Pocket Account

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

The previous committee of  a Masjid had opened an Islamic account which comes together with a savings pocket. If money is kept in this pocket, investment profits are earned.

  1. Is the usage of such profits permissible?
  2. If not, what should be done with the money?
  3. In the future, should money be kept in this pocket, as it can also be kept in the transactional account where it will not earn profits.

Some say that keeping money here will be of benefit to the the Masjid, as it is an Islamic account, and money will be generated for the Masjid without any extra effort. Others are doubtful about the permissibility of such profits. What should be done?

Answer:

The profits incurred thus far should be given to the poor. In the future the money should be kept in such an account where it will not generate a profit.
