Salaah in short sleeves & stretching the words of Athaan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulfiqh.com

Is it permissible to perform salaah wearing a short sleeve qurta? What is the status of one’s salaah?

What is the mas’ala regard the method of delivering the athaan? Where should one lengthen the madd expecially in the word Allah?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

When one stands in salāh, he is standing in front of the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth.  The auspiciousness of the occasion demands one to be dressed in the most appropriate clothing.    One should not wear any clothing which is considered inferior or substandard in salāh.  Wearing short sleeved clothing is considered and seen as improper conduct.  All such clothing which one would not wear when visiting a pious person should be avoided in salāh.[i]

The Qurrā’ state that there are two causes for madd:

1)     Textual (lafhthī)

2)     Semantic (ma’nawī)

One form of the semantic (ma’nawī) cause to lengthen the madd is giving reverence (ta’zīm).  This cause is present in the lām of the word Allah.  Hence, it is permissible to stretch and lengthen the word Allah in the athān.[ii]
