As a Muslim, it is important to abhor and abstain from interest. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah ﷻ has cursed the lender and the receiver of interest, as well as the one who witnesses it and records it. The latter two are also cursed because they have become a party to assisting in a grave socially and economically crippling sin.[1]
As such, an accountant or bookkeeper may sometimes have to take on clients that deal with interest-based transactions. The two jobs may sometimes be referred to each other synonymously; however, there may be differences between them. The primary job of a bookkeeper is to maintain a general ledger in which a company or firm’s day-to-day transactions may be recorded. While an accountant may also be a bookkeeper, the primary job of an accountant is to take data from a bookkeeper and offer financial insight to a business. They may also file taxes for this business.[2]
In the cases of both the accountant and the bookkeeper, if their job constitutes them recording the deal of interest directly while it is underway, then it will be impermissible for them to do so. If, however, they are simply auditing or recording the transaction after it has been completed, they will not fall under the category of those who are cursed for recording interest-based transactions.

عن جابر رضي الله عنه قال لعن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم آكل الربا وموكله وكاتبه وشاهديه وقال هم سواء
قال في الهامش: [وكاتبه] لأن كتابة الربا إعانة عليه ومن هنا ظهر أن التوظف في البنوك الربوية لا يجوز فإن كان عمل الموظف في البنك ما يعين على الربا كالكتابة أو الحساب فذلك حرام لوجهين الأول إعانة على المعصية والثاني أخذ الأجرة من المال الحرام فإن معظم دخل البنوك حرام مستجلب بالربا وأما إذا كان العمل لا علاقة له بالربا فإنه حرام للوجه الثاني فحسب فإذا وجد بنك معظم دخله حلال جاز فيه التوظف للنوع الثاني من الأعمال والله أعلم

ولو كان لمسلم على النصراني دين فباع النصراني خمرا وأخذ ثمنها وقضاه المسلم من دينه جاز له أخذه لأن بيعه لها مباح ولو كان الدين لمسلم على مسلم فباع المسلم خمرا وأخذ ثمنها وقضاه صاحب الدين كره له أن يقبض ذلك من دينه كذا في السراج الوهاج
