Feedlot Lamb and Qurbani

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: The commonly know ruling regarding the suitability of a sheep for Qurbani is that it should be a year old or 6 months old and resemble a 1 year old. It is now very common that sheep are raised using a modern “feedlot” system that courses rapit growth. A 4 month old Lamb can weigh more than 55 kgs while an average 1 year old grass fed sheep weighs about 51 kgs. I should mention that most Marino sheep and cows in South Africa are raised in Feedlots. Is it suitable to use a lamb for Qurbani that is large because of its diet in the feedlot but is younger than 6 months old?

A: No.

It is necessary for the sheep to be at least 6 months old.
