Excursions for Girls

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I am at an Islamic school and have given permission to grade 12 boys to go on an overnight excursion. The girls and certain teachers are insisting they should also be allowed to go. The distance is less than 78km, however I have said they cannot go due to other Sharee factors. Parents want an explanation. Please advise.

A: Yes definitely they should not be allowed to go. The main reason for restrictions in travel of females, whether distance of safr or not is the fear of fitnah (evils), and who can deny the fear of fitnah in this day and age. There are ample examples of horrible incidents that took place on such trips to prove that the fear of fitnah is very real and not speculative.
