Spouses Reading Salaah and Iqamat

Q: If only husband and wife are perfoming salaat together, is it necessary/compulsory for the wife to recite the iqamat? Also, what is the niyyat if they intend reading tahajjud together?

A. She will not recite the Iqaamat; instead the husband will recite it. If they are performing Tahajjud in Jamaat, she will stand behind the husband and not next to him. For her Salaah to be valid behind him, the husband should also make the intention of leading a female in Salaah.
