Diabetes and Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I am a type 2 diabetic on insulin twice a day. Is fasting fard (compulsory) on me? There are days when I can manage this and there are days when I cannot. So I am not sure as to whether the days need to be made up or do I pay for these days that I did not fast?

A: You will have to keep Qadhaa for the days that you could not manage to fast. You are able to fast so paying Fidyah is not yet an option for you. Payment of Fidyah is for a person who has lost hope of recovery and is absolutely sure that he will not be able to keep the Qadhaa. According to what you have written, you are able to fast occasionally, so spread the Qadhaa (after Ramadhaan) over a long period, so that it does not become difficult upon you.

May Allah Ta’aala make it easy for you, Aameen.
