Is it permissible to put black henna on the hands or feet if it contains chemicals?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Is it permissible to use black henna, mehndi on the hands or feet, the question is not in regards to the color, but because there are chemicals used in it, is it still permissible to apply it even with these chemicals?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Yes, it is permissible provided that there are no impure ingredients in the chemicals and no animate figures are drawn. [i]

Henna dyes the skin and the chemicals added usually enhance the color. However if the chemicals added are of such a nature that they form a waterproof barrier then it will not be permissible during the days when a woman has to pray salah as she will not be able to perform wudhu.
