Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The desire and thought to become a wali of Allah and inculcate taqwa within you is a gift and tawfeeq from Allah Ta’ala. Value the thought and act upon it without any hesitation before the thought escapes your heart and you lose the tawfeeq to practice upon it.

To become a friend of Allah, the simple prescription is mentioned in the Quran:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.[1]

While we may explain in writing how to become a friend of Allah, which may remain a theoretical issue, you need to practically become a wali. To do so, identify a spiritual guide and benefit from his company. Observe him closely and implement his character and conduct within your life. What you see and observe is the best training.

Another prescription mentioned in the Quran is:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.[2]

Look after your taqwa. If you control your speech and guard your tongue, you will have good control over all of your limbs. Consider the following Hadith:

أَيُّ الإِسْلاَمِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «مَنْ سَلِمَ المُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ، وَيَدِهِ»

Some people asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), “Whose Islam is the best? i.e. (Who is a very good Muslim)?” He replied, “One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands.[3]

In the meantime, you may refer to the Dar Al-Mahmood website (also by Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb) for spiritual guidance. You may listen to the talks of Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb on tasawwuf/daralmahmood.org or daruliftaa.net.
