Issues with aunt

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My aunties continually accuse me and my family of doing bad things and ill-treating her, I am not perfect but i don’t look at whether i am right or wrong but ask for forgiveness anyways and have never ever back chatted them as i know the importance of maintaining kinship. However, i always tell my mum and brother only about what she says as i feel i need someone to talk to, and i always tell them not to say anything to my aunts as i dont want any fights. Is this wrong to speak and discuss with my family my problems or is this gossiping as well? What is the best way to deal with this situation?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You are correct in understanding the importance of maintaining family ties as Islam has placed tremendous emphasis on doing so. In light of this general principle, we advise that you try to adopt such methods that would create love and kindness between your family and aunt. As such, this will serve as a solution and eliminate all the problems you are facing.

Whenever you are in her presence, do not speak to her in an ill-manner, speak to her with kindness and care. Occasionally send her gifts and things that she may well appreciate.

However, if all has failed after exhausting all possible ways to create a better relationship with your aunt, then it is best to limit your interactions with her to the bare minimum. This will prevent occurrences of any complications in future.

Furthermore, while speaking to your family members, if the discussion leads to speaking about your aunt in an ill-manner, then such a discussion will fall under the ambit of gheebat (gossiping).
