I recently received an email that states that the term ‘mosque’ is derived from the spanish word for “mosquito.”

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

It was termed as such because during the Crusades, King Ferdinand said they were going to go and swat the muslims “like mosquitos.” is this true?

Answer

To our knowledge, the word ‘Mosque’ is derived from French mosquée and this
in turn is derived from Italian moschea which in turn is derived from the
Arabic Masjid.
