Can i video call my family?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu alaykum.

Respected Mufti Saheb.

I am messaging to enquire if video calling (such as the whatsapp video call) is haraam? I am married in Durban but i am from Johannesburg. Would video calling my parents or my husband whilst i am on holiday by my parents be considered haraam?

Jazakallah khair

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

There are differences of opinions amongst contemporary Ulama on the permissibility and non-permissibility of video calling. The Darul Iftaa advises to adopt Taqwa and holds the latter view.
