What is the status of keeping two names for a child?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamualaikum wrwb

Could you please assist in regarding naming my son

1. Can we call Mohammed Abdurrahman ul hasan

2. I noticed some people put 2names to baby, one is official and another unofficial (regular). Which name will be effective on baby’s life and also on day of ressurection by which name will be called.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu alaikum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

May Allah make your son the coolness of your eyes and may Allah make him amongst the Saaliheen (pious people). Ameen. It is not necessary to keep two names for your son. However, you may keep both names for your son according to your cultural practices. You may choose anyone of the two as the official and the unofficial name.

Both names have good meanings:

Mohammad – The praised one  [i]

Abdur Rahman – The slave of Rahman

Al Hasan – Beautiful [ii]

We hope and make dua that the meanings of all the names will have a positive effect on your son in this world and in the hereafter Ameen.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
