Kissing One’s Children

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Can a Mother around 35 years age kiss her Son around 10 years age to show and create mutual affection. Similary can a father kiss his daughter. Is this just allowed or is this encouraged?  Were there any age limits until when this is permitted?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, a mother may kiss her son and a father may kiss his daughter regardless of age.

One should kiss one’s children and show love and affection toward them. Consider the following narration:

Abu Hurayra (radhiallahu ‘anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) kissed al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali while al-Aqra‘ ibn Habis al-Tamimi was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra‘ said, “I have ten children and I have never kissed any of them.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) looked at him and said, “Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5997)

However, if there is any fear of immorality, it will be impermissible.[1]
