Misc. questions regarding sadaqa

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalaam Wa’alaikum Wa Rahmatullah…

Is it okay to give Sadaqah on behalf of someone else. As in, I have this Masjid donation box at home and also put some money in to it every now and then especially if a minor accident happens with me etc. I have a friend, she is like a sister but very forgetful in that sense of doing such things… many times she is involved in minor accidents etc. and I tell her to put some money aside to give to a Masjid or something whenever – but she barely remembers. So, this time I decided to put some money into my Masjid donation box on her behalf (by mentioning her name, and praying for her).

So, the main question is that would this be accepted? As well, as doing Sadaqah on behalf of other people, such as my parents, my friends, relatives and the deceased? Because, when I was younger my mum would always make me touch the money before placing it in for Sadaqah on my behalf whenever something happened with me or when she has bad dreams about me. Is it necessary to make someone touch it, or only they have to do their own?

Jazak’Allahu Khair’an.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is permissible to give sadaqa on behalf of someone else, although it would be better if your friend can adopt this practice herself. However, there is no need to touch the sadaqa money before offering the sadaqa for it to be valid. This practice should be completely avoided. The intention for sadaqa is sufficient.[i][ii][iii]
