Duaa in Salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am really confused about how to make duaa for salat and i have many doubts?

(Read the entire thing to understand what i am saying has it is not in right order) Are we allowed to make duaa after fard prayer and by that i mean like for example in Zuhr prayer after praying the 4 fard rakats can you make duaa or do i make duaa after i end my prayer and am i allowed to raise my hand while making my duaa as i read that the Prophet(PBUH) did not rasie his hands to make duaa (im not sure if read that right maybe i interpreted it wrong)and how do i make a duaa and ask Allah(SWT) for forgiveness and ask for things like getting good grades and praying for other family members? And when i read that you make duaa during your prayers, to ask for forgiveness and ask for things like blessings , i’m really confused and i’m not sure how to do my prayer now after reading about this and i also read scholars agreed that raising hand was innovation that should not be done i believe it was called biqah or something , i really need help with this ….

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

There are two issues to consider, Duaa at the ending of Salah before Salam and Duaa after Salah. Both will be discussed:

1)    Duaa in Salah:

It is Sunnah to recite a Duaa after reciting Durood in the last Qa’adah (sitting).[i] Some Duaas which may be recited are:

Transliteration: Allahumma inni dhalamtu nafsi dhulman katheera, walaa yaghfirudh dhunuba illa anta, faghfirlee maghfiratam min indika war hamni, innaka antal ghafoorur Raheem

Translation: O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful (Sahih Al Bukhari: 6326)

Transliteration: Rabbana aatina fid dunya hasanatan wa fil aakhirati hasanatan wa qinaa adhaabar naar.

Translation: Oh our Rabb, grant us (all that which is) good in this world, (all that which is) good in the Aakhirah and save us from the punishment of the fire (Jahannam) (Surah Al Baqarah: 201)

2)     Duaa after Salah:

This issue could be divided into four parts:

  1. A.   Duaa after salah:

Consider the following Hadith:

Translation: Nabi ﷺ was asked: Which Duaa is most heard? Nabi ﷺ replied: The dua made in the last third of the night and the Dua after Fardh salah.” (Sunan Tirmidhi 5/527)

  1. B.   Raising the hands in Duaa.

One may raise hands when making Duaa. This is regardless of whether the Duaa is after Salah, or any other time. Consider the following Hadith:

Translation: Indeed, Allah is shy and beneficent. He is shy when his servant raises his hands to him (in Duaa) to return them empty. (Sunan Abu Dawood 2/78)

Translation: When Nabi ﷺ would perform Duaa, he would raise his hands and wipe his hands over his face. (Sunan Abu Dawood 2/611)

  1. C.   Adhkaar and Duaa’s to be recited after Salah.

Imam Nawawi cites Ijmaa on the fact that Adhkaar after Salah are Mustahab.[ii]

Some of the Masnoon Adhkaar which one may recite after Salah:

i)

Translation: when Nabi ﷺ  used to finish salah, He ﷺ used to recite Istighfaar thrice and then recite:

“O Allah You are peace and from You is peace. Blessed are You o the being of Majesty and Honour” (Sahih Muslim: 591)

ii)

Translation: Nabi (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) used to recite after Salah:

“There is no deity but Allah, He has no partner, for Him is the kingdom, for Him is all praise and He has power over all things. O Allah none can prevent what You give and none can give what You prevent and no wealthy persons wealth can benefit from You.” (Sahih Muslim: 593)

D.  Collective Duaa.

Mufti Taqi Usmani states:

It is noticed that where congregational supplications are permanently observed, it sometimes creates an impression that such collective supplication is a necessary part of the salah, since this impression is not correct, as discussed earlier, it is advisable to avoid congregational form of supplication at frequent occassions, and to educate the people about the correct position… (Contemporary Fatawa, Page 62-63)

In conclusion, one may recite Masnoon Duaas and Adhkaar after Salah. One may also occasionally make Duaa individually whilst raising the hands.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
