I am really grief stricken and depressed

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

As-salāmu ‘alaykum…..Mufti Shahab, 1. I am really grief stricken and depressed due to this problem. Most of the Time, when I give exam, and in selection process it seems I am going to select but at last point, I got rejected without giving me any reason, and this phenomenon has repeated so many times. I got engaged, and it seemed I was going to get married soon but at last moment, it was broken. Mostly relatives becomes against me whenever I needed them the most, after the situation is over, all becomes friendly again with me. It seems like when I start climbing on stairs, from top last step I falls down that causes more harm and severe injury, If I could have slipped from 1st or 2nd step of stair, injury may not had been too severe. Problem is such that from heart, pain spreads throughout my body, and even I missed my salah due to this. At this point I am terribly broken and afraid of facing any challenge in this worldly life. So please help me to solve this problem and how to cultivate patience in my heart (some Islamic practical way to do), or please suggest some dua to this specific problem. 2. Due to many responsibilities (family and professional), I am not getting enough free time to complete my Hifz which is top priority for me. It saddened me a lot and I am struggling with it from last three years. Your precious advice can transform my life. Please dua for me to Allah to replace with better what I have lost. (Alhamdulillah, I am working as a Manager Research and Development and have family) Jazakallah Khair

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The various challenges of life are meant to nuture us to get closer to Allah. At times, we believe so much in ourselves that we forget Allah and the power of Allah. We get overwhelmed with our skills and abilities. When our efforts turn against us and we become unsuccessful, then we realise our weakness and understand everything happens with the will of Allah.[1]

Use the opportunity to reflect and reform. Carry on adopting the means for your success and progress. Place your trust in Allah and make dua to Allah for the success of the means you adopted.[2] If the effort is fulfilled, you will attribute it to Allah. If it is not successful, then you will attribute it to the will of Allah. There is no need to be grieved and sad.[3]

Refer to the following verse:

ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَـٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ۬ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيۡهِ رَٲجِعُونَ

Translation:

Who, when inflicted with a difficulty, say: “We certainly belong to Allah, and to Him we are bound to return.”

[Surah Baqara/ Verse 156]

When approaching any venture, perform two rakaats salaah and make dua.[4] Leave the rest to Allah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
