Is it mandatory to cut the hair of new born baby?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Is it mandatory (Fard) to cut hair of newborn baby (birth hair)? If yes, what is the explanation from the Islam and scientific point of view?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Dear Brother,

It is advisable to cut the hair of the new born baby on the seventh day after birth and to give silver in charity or its value equivalent to the weight of the hair. (1) Consider the following hadith:

Translation: Muhammad bin ‘Ali bin Al-Husain narrated that Ali bin Abi Talib Radhyallahu Anhu said: “Nabi Sallallahu Alihi Wasallam had the ‘Aqiqah for Al-Hasan with one sheep and said: ‘O Fatimah! Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver as charity”. He said: “So I weighed it, and it was the weight of a Dirham or a bit of a Dirham”. Sunan Tirmizi [1519]
