Difference between Abdul Munaf and Abdul Manaf

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

What is the difference between the name Abdul Munaf and Abdul Manaf? Is it ok to continue with the name Abdul Munaf?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Abdul Manaf (عبد مَناف) means “servant of Manaf,” Manaf is the name of a pre-Islamic idol in Makkah.[1] It is not permissible to keep this name.

Abdul Munaf (مُناف عبد) means “servant of the elevated. We advise against keeping this name too as it is similar to the above name.[2]
