Is there any amount of Mahr which is Sunnah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Is there any amount of Mahr which is Sunnah? If yes, how high is this? If no, what do you suggest?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

The Mahr of the wives of Rasullullah (Sallallahu Wa Sallam) was 500 Dirhams (Silver Coins) which equates to 1530, 88016 Grams of silver and 49, 2177917 Troy Ounces of Silver.[1]

You may contact your local Islamic Organization or reputed jeweller to find out the exact equivalent amount in your local currency.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best

Darul Iftaa

Checked and Approved,

Mufti Ebrahim Desai.
