Masah upon khuffayn for a muqīm and a musāfir

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by AnswersToFatawa

Masah upon khuffayn (leather or special socks) for a muqīm (non-traveller) and a musāfir (traveller)

Wiping upon the socks which fulfills the conditions of masah is permissible up to 72 hours (3 days) for a musāfir (traveller of a shar’i distance) and 24 hours (1 day)  for a muqīm (one who is not traveling a shar’i distance). [1]

The Prophet ﷺ stated after being asked about masah on khuffain:

لِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلاَثَةٌ، وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمٌ[2]

Translation: three days for a musāfir and one day for a muqīm.

Note: the time of masah starts from the time a person breaks his wudhu after wearing the khuffayn and not from the time of wearing them. [3]

For example: a person wore the khuffain, upon completion wudhu at 11:00 AM. He then broke his wudhu at 12:00 PM. If the person is a muqīm, then he will now be allowed to perform masah till 12:00 PM the following day (as opposed to 11:00 AM).
