Unlawful money to Mosques

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Unlawful money to Mosques

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “Allah (SWA) is pure and accepts only that which is pure” (Sahih Muslim)

To give unlawful money to a Masjid or any Islamic institutions is unlawful and impermissible. (Fatawa Mahmoodiyah p.193 v.5) However, if one states that the money provided is from lawful wealth then it will be permissible to accept. (Fatawa Hindiyyah p.343 v.5)

Similarly, if a person’s majority income is lawful and less than half is unlawful, then it will be permissible to accept his donations.
