I am a physician working in private practice and in recent months, found out that one of my employees had been stealing money by forging checks. Once we found out and informed the bank, we found out that we would only receive a limit of $1,000 in reimbursement out of our total of $20,000 in losses. But after repeatedly appealing to our bank, they have agreed to reimburse up to $9,000. My question is about this total reimbursement money – because it is more than the bank’s standard limit, is it permissible for us to accept the money? Because we have been long time customers with multiple accounts, the bank probably felt threatened that we would cancel our accounts. Is this $9,000 in reimbursements halal for us?
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.
This money is halal to accept–given that the bank gave this money of their own accord, without any unreasonable pressure or conduct from your side.
And Allah alone gives success.
