Assalaamu alykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu

I make dua that Allah Ta’ala bless Hadhrat Mufti Saahib in every way with excellence in both the worlds. Aameen. Please make dua for me also.

There has been some confusion regarding the khillal of the toes in some of the Makaatib. Some Ulama are saying that it must be done after washing the feet. Whilst others say that it must be done before washing the feet or whilst washing.

Please explain which is the correct method of making the khilaal of the toes.

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Wa-‘Alaykum As-Salām Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh,

In principle, the sunan serve the purpose of making up for any possible shortcomings in the farā’id.

In wudū‘, washing the feet completely is fard, whereas as doing khilāl is sunnah.  It is possible that when one washes his feet, water might not have reached between the toes.  Therefore, in order to make up for this possible shortcoming in the fard, one does the sunnah of khilāl afterwards and makes sure that the water has reached between the toes, as well.

The fuqahā’ have clearly stated that it is sunnah to do khilāl of the toes after washing the feet, as seen in the texts below:

And Allah knows best

Wassalam u Alaikum
