Could you please let me know if it is permissible to have shops on rent basis in the masjid building (in the entrance area or in any part of the masjid) and also if that amount (rent) could be used for covering the expenses of the Masjid.

The shops which are constructed separately from the boundary of the mosque they may be given on rent for the income of mosque. And the rent may be used to meet the expenses of the mosque.
