Working as a Waiter and Sometimes Serving Pork

Answered by: Mufti Muhammad Asadullah Anwar Adam

Question:

I wanted to ask if my money is haram. I worked at a hospital where they have a restaurant. I worked there as a waiter and brought people their food. But sometimes I also had to give them sausage which was pork, I didn’t have to give alcohol or other haram things only sometimes pork

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

In the Holy Qur’an Allah (SWA) has said:

“O people eat of what is permissible and good in the earth.” [1]

One should work in such an environment where his income is 100% halal. Two conditions need to be found to determine if the work is lawful or not;

The nature of the work is lawful if more than 50% of the income is halal.

Bearing all this in mind and taking into consideration your question we can conclude that working as a waiter for such a restaurant would entail earning more than 50% halal since you will be delivering mainly halal products. However, you should still make effort to look for a job which does not involve handling haram. In the meantime, to keep this job and work in such an environment would be permissible.

Only Allah knows best
