Superstitious Beliefs About Pregnancies

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

Do grannies say that if someone is pregnant in the house, we should not pierce the ears of other children (girls) as it will harm the baby inside the womb when it is being born? Same for Sunnat (katna for boys). I mean relations of that pregnant woman should not do. Is it true?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There is no truth behind this in Islam.

Allah Ta’ala tells us in The Quran:

ما أصاب من مصيبة إلا بإذن الله

“No misfortune befalls except by Allah’s command…”1

From this verse, we understand that there is no basis for superstitions in Islam. Whatever good or bad happens to a person will only happen with the permission of Allah Ta’ala.

Only Allah knows best
