Will the Cost of a Gravestone Be Paid From the Estate of a Deceased Person?

Question:

Will the cost of a gravestone be paid from the estate of a deceased person? I.e. will it be counted as a kafan/dafan cost?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The cost of burial of the deceased that can be taken from their estate incorporates all of those things which are necessary to prepare them for burial and to bury them[1]. As a gravestone[2] is not a necessity, the cost of it will not be taken from the estate of the deceased.

Only Allah knows best
