Did the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam give azan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Did the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam give azan?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Imam Tirmizi narrates a hadith that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam did azan whilst in safr (travelling) and led the companions in prayer.  However, there is a hadith in Musnad Ahmad with the same chain of narrators stating that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam in fact ordered Saaiduna Billal Radiallahu Anhu to give the azan and that he did not do it himself.

Imam Nawaaii (RA) verifies with the hadith of Sunan Tirmizi.  (Raddul Muhtar p.71 v.2)
