Zakat on Madrasah books and other stock

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicPortal.co.uk

Zakat on Madrasah books and other stock

Question

Our Madrasah sells books and sweets throughout the year. The profits are for the Madrasah. Are the books and sweets Zakatable as they are for business?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

Answer

If your Madrasah is waqf and charitable in nature, there is no Zakat on the books and sweets. This is because waqf does not belong to anyone, nor do individuals benefit from it in the way that they benefit from a non-charitable company.
