Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah is a cure for ninety nine illnesses, the lightest being depression/anxiety.”
Answer
Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) and other Muhaddithun have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu)
“Saying La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah is a cure for ninety nine sicknesses, the most minor being sorrow/depression.”
(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 542)
The chain consists of a narrator who has been declared weak by some Muhaddithun and slightly credible by others.
(Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 1 pg. 298, number: 1136 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 98)
However, the Hadith is corroborated and is suitable to quote.
(Refer: Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 3565, Al Mu’jamus Saghir, Hadith: 438, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 1 pg. 306. Also see: Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 444 pg. 617 and Al Mudawi, Hadith: 3715)
