Question

Salam mufti sahib, weird question but is there anything wrong with walking under trees at night. I feel like there is this myth perpetuated by people that walking at night in the vicinity of trees is dangerous due to jinn or whatever.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The hadith in Bukhari explains the prophet peace be upon him mentions when night falls (or when it is the evening), stop your children from going out, for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night has passed, release them and close the doors and mention Allah’s Name, for Satan does not open a closed door. Tie the mouth of your water-skin and mention Allah’s Name; cover your containers and utensils and mention Allah’s Name. Cover them even by placing something across it, and extinguish your lamps. ” (Bukhari)

From the above-mentioned hadith, it gives us a guideline that we should try to stay indoors after maghrib, saying this if we need to leave the house after maghrib for work or other matters or in your case if one was to walk under a tree, it will be permissible as this can be found in the lives of the companions.

(Sahih Bukhari Chapter of Covering the Containers Hadith 5623)
