In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

According to the Hanafi jurists, once a sunnah or nafl is commenced it becomes wajib/compulsory to complete. This is derived from the statement of Allah in the Quran “Do not nullify your actions.” Thus in the midst of sunnah, when the Jumuah khutbah is commenced, then one should finish the prayer as quickly as possible.

There are other Hadith that mentions the impermissibility of speaking or any other action during the khutbah as well as doing any action apart from listening to the Sermon.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If you say to your companion when the imam is preaching on Friday, ‘Be quiet and listen,’ you have engaged in idle talk.”[1]

In conclusion, one should refrain from praying sunnah or nafl near the time of khutbah. However, if one is in prayer, they should conclude it as fast as possible without ruining the prayer.[2]
