Question

Assalamu Alaikum,

I always pay zakat on my wife’s gold assets as she is a housewife. But now I have debt around 1 lac, so can I pay it from my wife’s zakat with her permission (if applicable) or is it not allowed in Islam?

Answer:

The one who owes a debt and does not possess Nisab in excess of the debt which is owed will be eligible to receive zakat. First, you must fulfil this condition to be eligible for zakah. However, the wife is not allowed to pay zakah to the husband due to the benefits being linked between them, so you will not be allowed to take zakah from your wife.[1]
