Khatib’s al-Baghdadi (rahimahullah) book; Sharafu Ashabil Hadith

Question

Are the Hadiths mentioned in Sharafu Ashabil Hadith (شرف اصحاب الحديث) by Hafiz Khatib al-Baghdadi (rahimahullah) suitable to quote?

Answer

Hafiz Khatib al-Baghdadi (rahimahullah) has recorded narrations which discuss the virtues of learning and propagating Hadith and the virtues of the seekers of Hadith in his book ‘Sharafu Ashabil Hadith’.

He has cited the chain of narrators for every Hadith recorded therein. These chains would have to be inspected individually. It is not possible to pass a blanket ruling. The book does contain some unreliable Hadiths as can be seen here.

It should also be noted that the Muhaddithun have allowed the usage of weak Hadiths for topics like the ones discussed in this book.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
